Studying Humanity Can Lead to Rewarding Careers
How much would your life improve if you could figure out what every person thought, felt, and was like? Would you have better friends or a better job because of it? How many decision would you have gone back and changed if you knew how a person really was on the inside as well as out? It is very hard for someone not to want to go back and change what they have done in the past because they believe that it shapes their future. The ideal of knowing what a person is thinking may seem like a supernatural power, but if you study humanity you can come close to understanding and predicting human behaviors.
When looking at or studying humanities you can see that it has everything to do with understanding people from the inside out. In no way can anyone truly understand one another to the bone, but we can do our best to understand the tendencies of a person. For some that is hard to believe and to understand because, how can we really predict what one would do? Studying humanities allows us to gain a base of research and understanding and experiences individuals have come to understand. In some cases the ideals and the thoughts may be far from our own realm of understanding. For others, this type of study is right up their alley.
Those who study humanities and the different elements that is under its disciplines study the culture of a person, language, history, and also the nature of an individual. In no way will every single person fit the description or the profile of every individual, but in reality they will come pretty close to the values of an individual. If you take a moment to think about it, there are paid professionals that sit down with people and discuss their life past, present and future to better help them. These people are called psychiatrists. How else are they supposed to help you if their humanities studies did not prepare them for your meeting? Studying humanity gives one insight into what motivates and compels individuals, families, groups and communities.
When thinking about it in real life terms, those professions such as psychiatry and other professions dealing in the realm of humanities make a lot of sense. Most people are not always receptive to the advice or the ideas that they have in order to help you. Those who actually listen and follow through with what is being subscribed to help can completely change the life of a person. Studying the human condition can help those who are in top government positions that are making the decisions for our nation. They have to analyze our nation of people and think about how they would react to a particular act or motion that has been created. Not everyone will agree, but for the most part, the majority of people will. Without deeply understanding the past, social behavior and the culture of our nation, many decisions could not have been made with such confidence. We can rest assured knowing that this great academic discipline has helped us mold a new and prosperous future, if we just trust those who can understand our human nature. Studying and learning about humanity on individual and community levels enhances many careers and can broaden one’s understanding of any field or business.
The Humanities Program is Not as Fluffy as they Say
When people accuse the humanities program of being too broad, it becomes clear that they really haven’t done their research. Indeed, these complaints are hardly ever launched by the students who are actually enrolled in the arts and sciences program at their university. Thus, when you are looking through your course catalog, trying to figure out which courses you are going to take for your upcoming semester, do not be scared to register for a few humanities courses. When you get your hands on a used humanities textbook , you are going to be able to tell that the aforementioned complaints were a tad bit hasty (at best).
The humanities department, as it’s called, is actually just an umbrella term for a number of departments that are at your university. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot major in “humanities” when you show up for school. To be simple, here, the used humanities textbook simply adopts humans as its focus. Thus, the humanities program is going to focus on art, culture, and the things that we humans hold dear. While you may be able to register yourself for a “humanities” survey course, this kind of course is merely going to expose you (partially) to several of the programs that are housed by the humanities department at your school. The used humanities textbook that comes along with a survey course might very well cover some fairly disparate topics: literature, art, music, and philosophy, for example.
And while we’re on the subject, you should know that the humanities survey courses are really going to help you out a great deal when you are just starting out at school. Because these courses serve the purpose of exposing you to many of the programs that your school offers, they can really help you begin to develop an understanding of your own interests. By taking these courses, you can essentially taste-test the various programs that your campus has to offer, meaning that you are not going to have to waste your time by taking courses that fall within departments that you really, truly hate. If you have never taken a survey course before, be sure that you are not forgetting about them when the time comes to register for classes.
While the used humanities textbook has caught a little bit of flack from the more practical-minded students around your campus, you should never let them get to you. Indeed, there is nothing wrong with the humanities department. Should you choose to do so, you can pursue a highly specialized academic path (not unlike you’d be able to do in any of the other departments at your college). At the end of the day, if you are trying to figure out whether or not you are going to enjoy your used humanities textbook and your humanities coursers, all you have to do is ask yourself one question: do I enjoy art and culture? If you find that you do enjoy art and culture, then you’re never going to be upset with your decision to pursue a degree in the humanities.
Of course, it’s not hard for you to head out to the store ahead of time and look at a few of these texts in advance. Give yourself a little sneak peek, and you are not going to have to worry about a thing when the time comes to register for your courses.
A Broad Diverse Humanities Department
It is entirely normal to feel a little bit indecisive when you first arrive at college. Unless you have picked a school that is geared towards one particular career path (i.e. journalism, medical studies, or the like), you are going to have a ton of options to consider when it comes time to register for your courses. Of course, if you know that you’d like to pursue an intellectual course load, then you might want to look into some of the used humanities textbooks that are for sale at your campus book store . Indeed, the humanities department is going to present you with myriad academic paths, meaning that you are not going to have to make up your mind right away. You’ll be able to take as much time as you need to pick a focus, and all the while, you will be exploring the subjects that hold your interest the best.
As you are looking through used humanities textbooks , do not fail to consider your school’s English program. If you know that you love reading, and if you know that you love talking to other people about the books that you have read (and are reading), then the English program is going to be a great fit for you. You’ll spend the majority of your time reading and writing in the English program, and you’ll be introduced to the vast (and initially intimidating) world of literary criticism. There are numerous foci for you to consider within this department, so you’ll be able to exercise a certain amount of freedom even after you have declared your major. Truly, the English track is one of the most interesting tracks that you’ll ever encounter.
Of course, if you are not a huge fan of English, then you are going to want to focus on other used humanities books . Perhaps you fancy yourself as an emerging connoisseur of art. If so, then you are going to want to look into the art history and art appreciation courses that your humanities department offers. Typically speaking (and depending on where you go to school), these courses are going to change a great deal from semester to semester. So, if you see something that you know you’ll love, you have to leap on the opportunity, buy the necessary used humanities textbooks , and register for the class as soon as you can. Seats are taken rather quickly in these courses, so always be proactive when it comes time to register.
If reading and art don’t appeal to you, then you might turn your interest to the used humanities textbooks that focus on other languages. Indeed, you’d be surprised how many careers are going to open up for you when you begin to approach fluency in another language. If you have never given any thought to learning a new language, then know that college is going to be the perfect time for you to try some of these courses out.
The great thing about the humanities department is that it’s incredibly diverse. Feel free to spend a few years experimenting with different subjects, seeing which ones are going to hold your interest in the long run. Once you find something that you truly, totally love, you can begin to cater your course load to your newfound focus.
Going To College Without Going Broke
For most people considering attending a college or university to get a degree in whatever particular field of study interests them most, one of the greatest factors they consider before deciding whether or not to enroll is cost. Times are tough right now, and the overall price tag on attending a college or four year university is a matter of great importance. Tuition costs are higher than ever, and will only continue to rise as time goes on. In addition to that, there are several other expenses related to attending college that must be factored in to the overall cost: things like lab fees, textbooks, the cost of food, and housing are all things that must be considered, as well.
In light of all the various aspects that together make up the total cost of earning a college degree, it becomes more than apparent that it is vitally important to find as many ways as possible to save money off of the many different expenses that are a part of attending a college or university. There is one expense that you will incur as a part of attending college that you can save a sizable amount of money on, though: the cost of textbooks. You will likely be required to purchase many different textbooks for all of the courses you will have to take to earn your degree. These college level textbooks are quite expensive, in some instances totaling hundreds of dollars apiece. With prices that high, the huge impact this expense will have on your finances, as well as the need to lower the cost of these textbooks, becomes apparent.
There is an easy way to lower the cost of the many different textbooks you will have to purchase to supplement your instruction in the classroom: you can purchase previously owned textbooks, rather than paying the high cost of brand new ones. As previously mentioned, a single college level textbook can cost hundreds of dollars, but used humanities textbooks , for instance, can be bought for half that cost. Considering the high price of these textbooks, and the fact that you will have to purchase many of them over the course of your college education, saving half off on your college textbooks will make a huge impact on your finances. Buying used humanities textbooks and other used textbooks, can be the difference between whether or not you struggle to make ends meet as you attend college, or whether you are more secure in your financial well being.
Finding used humanities textbooks can be as easy as checking the shelves at your college’s own bookstore. Most college’s bookstores are filled with previously used textbooks, including used humanities textbooks . You will more than likely find the exact textbooks you will need there, and save yourself a bundle in the process. If, however, you cannot find the textbooks you will need at your college’s bookstore, you can very likely find it online. The Internet can connect you to many different companies and individuals who deal in used textbooks, and you can find the used humanities textbooks you need without much difficulty. Whatever method you choose to use, buying used textbooks will save you money, and that is something every person entering college should aspire to do. After all, it’s about building yourself a successful future, not going broke in the present.

The Overwhelming Diversity of the Humanities Department
Are you thinking about entering the humanities department at your school? If so, then great! You are surely in for an enlightening, exciting experience. Before you enter into the humanities department, though, you are going to have to develop a rough understanding of the diversity of programs that it offers. Your humanities department does not merely tackle one subject; it’s a broad, umbrella department that houses many different programs. By developing an understanding of this umbrella, you can hope to focus your studies more effectively. Collected, here, are several of the subjects that you may encounter when you buy your first humanities textbook from the campus store. With any luck, they’ll provide you with a guiding light.
1) The Art Appreciation humanities textbook . Have you ever heard of an art appreciation course before? If you haven’t then you are in for a real treat. Essentially, what you do in an art appreciation course is…well, exactly what it sounds like: you appreciate art. Of course, appreciating something in the academic sense of the term means that you are going to be exploring it with a great number of fellow students, studying it hard and sharing your thoughts and ideas. Typically speaking, you are going to be able to take a variety of appreciation courses, ranging from music to classical art—from jazz to rococo, respectively. If you like art—like it even a little—then you are really going to love these courses. They’re relaxing, they’re fun, and they’re enormously enlightening.
2) The philosophy humanities textbook . If you enjoy talking to your fellow students, and if you fancy yourself as a critical thinker, then you are going to be able to get a lot of use out of these courses. Indeed, philosophy courses are going to expose you to all of the major philosophers, classical and new. You are going to be able to use these reading to begin to develop your own moral framework—to begin to develop your own understanding of right and wrong, but in a much more complex, intellectual way than you already have. And you should know, reader, that the typical philosophy humanities textbook is going to cover a broad range of subjects. Ethics, medical ethics, legal ethics, and the nature of man—don’t be surprised if such disparate topics are all covered by the same book!
3) The English humanities textbook . Typically you are going to encounter this text when you sign yourself up a “survey” course, although this isn’t the only place that you’re going to encounter it. If you decide that you’d like to get in touch with your inner poet, then chances are that you are going to have to pick up a large volume of poetry for your class. Know, reader, that these classes are enormously fulfilling. You are going to be introduced to tons of authors whom you have never heard of, which is going to help you begin to develop a new list of must-reads. If you thought that you were well read before you registered for this course, then you’re going to feel even better when you get around to studying.
As you can see, reader, the humanities department has a little bit of something for everyone. And this article has only begun to scratch the surface of the humanities classes that you can take!

Film Studies and the Humanities
When you are looking into the humanities program at your college, one thing is going to come to your mind almost immediately: you can study just about anything that you find interesting once you enroll in the humanities department. If you love art, then you can get a degree in art history. If you love music, then you can go into the performing arts degree (or the music theory degree). And, believe it or not, if you love film, then you can set out to get a degree in film studies. There are so many things that you can pursue when you’ve purchased your first round of humanities textbooks , so for the sake of simplicity, I’ll hold myself to the latter-most category that I’ve herein mentioned: film studies. Pursuing a degree in film studies can be one of the most fun things that you’ve ever done—one of the most fun things that you’ll ever do.
While many people seem to think that movies are, by definition, just fluff—just entertainment—they couldn’t be any more wrong if they tried. Indeed, movies are not just meaningless fluff. They are not just entertainment for the sake of entertainment. Indeed, people make movies for the same reasons that they make any other art. They make movies because they have a message to deliver (well, most of the time); likewise, they make films because they prefer working within a visual medium. When you set out to read your film studies humanities textbooks , you are going to begin to pick up the skills that you are going to need to extricate directorial meanings from the movies that you watch—the skills that you are going to need to get to the bottom of what they are trying to tell you, the audience, and the world at large.
One of the most fascinating things that you are going to study, here, is authorial influence. You will study what’s often referred to as auteur theory—the theory that particular writers and directors are so unique in theme, tone, and style that you can identify their work with complete accuracy. When you set out to read your humanities textbooks, you’ll begin to see that they devote much of their time to explaining how particular auteurs stretch their messages across multiple films—how they use their unique styles and their unique writing to deliver complex, unique messages. Once you really begin to understand a particular director, you’ll begin to see his or her movies in an entirely different light.
Of course, when you set out to read your film studies humanities textbooks, you are also going to pick up many of the skills that you are going to need to begin making your own films, if you are so inclined. You’ll begin to learn all of the terms that you are going to need in order to communicate with the industry insiders (i.e. shot-reverse-shot, cinematography, cuts, scenes, shots, chiaroscuro, etc…). You’ll also begin to study actual film technique, so you’ll start to develop your own sense of style. When you head out to the movie store to rent a new film, you’ll be able to pick it apart, appreciating it in all of its complexity.
So really, no one can tell you that your film studies humanities textbooks are worthless. They lead you to understand something that most people take for granted—the artistic quality of the films that we watch.
